Dana’s MultiTwister™ Technology to help Volkswagen Engines run cleaner 31.03.2010

MAUMEE, Ohio, March 2010 – Dana Holding Corporation (NYSE: DAN) announced today that Volkswagen has begun using its Victor Reinz® MultiTwister axial cyclonic air-oil separator (AOS) technology on several current and future engine platforms, becoming the first OEM to adopt Dana’s innovative approach to reducing vehicle emissions.

The unique design of Dana’s MultiTwister technology lowers vehicle operating costs and emissions by reducing oil consumption, while delivering significantly longer oil life.  The technology, which debuted on the 2008 Audi RS6 V-10 BiTurbo, will now be used on the 2010 and 2011 Volkswagen Polo, Golf, Touran and Passat models equipped with 1.0 liter MPI, 1.2 liter TFSI and 1.4 liter TSI engines.

“Our customers are constantly seeking ways to minimize the environmental impact of their engines while at the same time providing consumer value and performance,” said Dana Chief Technical Officer George Constand.  “Our MultiTwister technology ensures engines run cleaner and also helps save consumers money by enhancing powertrain reliability and reducing oil consumption.”

The patented MultiTwister design captures excess oil and returns it to the engine crankcase, rather than burning it off.  Eliminating excess oil from the combustion process helps lengthen the life of components such as the catalytic converter, turbocharger, inlet valves, carbon-particulate filter, and intercooler.  The MultiTwister design can be tailored to meet the needs of specific engines by utilizing different airflow geometries.

“By leveraging our diverse engineering expertise, we have developed a flexible technology that provides highly efficient air-oil separation for passenger, commercial, and off-highway vehicles,” said David Nash, director of research and development for the Dana Sealing Products Group.  “The flexibility of the MultiTwister enables Volkswagen to adapt this technology to realize efficiencies on a variety of its engines.”

Additional advantages of the MultiTwister AOS include its compact size, which saves essential space in smaller engines, and its durability.  Unlike the more common filter separators used by OEMs, the MultiTwister AOS is designed to operate over the lifetime of the vehicle.
