Heat Shields for High-voltage Batteries

Dana’s highly efficient heat shields are positioned between the high-voltage battery and the passenger compartment. They protect the passengers in case any cells short circuit and provide protection from explosive combustion and flying particles in the event of an accident.

If the battery modules are arranged one over the other, the heat shields are also positioned between the levels of the cell module, so as to prevent a thermal runaway (inadvertent chain reaction) to adjacent modules.

The three-layer sandwich shielding has an unmatched low surface weight of 2.5 to 3 kg/m2. Typical solutions from the competition have a surface weight of around 15 kg/m2.

Trial runs certify that the heat shields yield a shielding performance that far exceeds the requirements. The highly robust shields can hold out for at least 5 minutes without burning through, even under particle bombardment and explosive gases with temperatures of up to 1,500 °C.
