Conventional liquid-applied seals often require intensive cleaning and can damage the lid or enclosure. Dana’s rubber-metal design lifts away without residue, eliminating rework and preventing component replacement. The approach lowers downtime and preserves materials for reuse or recycling.

Smarter Logistics and Assembly

Foldable and segmented variants allow compact transport on Euro-pallets and simple installation without full-length tooling. Integrated injection-molded positioning pins secure the gasket quickly — even overhead — while reducing part count and assembly time compared with multi-component concepts.

Higher Output from a Compact Design 
Produced from titanium or steel using high-speed forming, the plate enables complex flow-field geometries and consistent quality at scale. A conductive coating ensures electrical performance, and the molded elastomer seal maintains integrity across a wide temperature range. With material thickness near 0.1 mm and formats up to 800 × 800 mm, more plates fit within the same stack volume, raising power density and lowering cost per kilowatt.

Bipolar plates manage water, hydrogen, and oxygen flows while providing a reliable barrier inside the electrolyzer. Dana applied its experience in stamping, embossing, coating, and elastomer processing to deliver a robust solution for demanding operating conditions.

The transmission is already in use in the Lamborghini Revuelto and has been selected for several other high-performance vehicles, including future models from Aston Martin, Bugatti, and more.

 

A key achievement of this innovation is its reduced longitudinal dimension, which increases drivability and dynamic vehicle behavior by allowing for optimal vehicle weight distribution, reduced wheelbase, and reduced vehicle length. The modular architecture enables hybridization before clutch, after clutch (smaller dual clutch) or mechanical only (ICE, P2, P2.5 or P3 hybrid configurations). Moreover, there is now a wide range of operating modes for engine cranking, torque infill, power looping and BEV reverse. This results in a compact design whereby the transmission can be used for both the transverse and longitudinal versions. For Lamborghini, the transverse version made it possible to continue offering a V12 engine in a hybrid platform.

Effective Protection Against Counterfeits
The Dana Secure Mobile App is helping customers to verify the authenticity of Victor Reinz products. Users simply use the free app to scan the product’s serialized QR code comprising an integrated hologram that ensures its validity in a matter of seconds. The app also supplies product information, technical service details, and installation instructions.

“Our Secure Label enables our dealers and end customers to quickly and easily verify that seals and sealing compounds are genuine, original Victor Reinz parts,” explains Jan von Ungern-Sternberg, Dana Regional Sales Lead Aftermarket EMEA. “Counterfeit products pose significant risks and will be tracked and prosecuted by Dana.”

Beginning 2025, the Dana Secure mobile app will expand to include verification for Spicer and Glaser® Aftermarket products.

Among the products on display will be Victor Reinz seals and sealing products as well as Spicer driveshafts and components. The gasket material AFM 80 possesses enhanced performance characteristics for difficult sealing situations in industry and is also PFAS-free. Specifically developed for the drinking water sector, AFM 34/2 already meets the KTW-BWGL approval criteria which will go into effect in March 2025 in accordance with the TrinkwV. KTW-BWGL stands for “Evaluation criteria for plastics and other organic materials in contact with drinking water”; TrinkwV for “Drinking Water Ordinance”.

 

AFM 80 – Even Stronger and More Adaptable
Gaskets made of AFM 80 make the perfect sealing solution for natural gas and hydrogen applications, refrigerating and air compressors as well as transmissions, pumps and fittings. AFM 80 shows its stuff under high pressure and vibration stress combined with narrow sealing lands. The material unites three of the most important properties of sealing technology: adaptability, strength and gas-tightness.

Dana makes AFM 80 without the use of any PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) at all. Many PFAS are toxic and cause widespread environmental pollution. The harmful chemicals can also be found in fish, milk and many other foodstuffs worldwide – and even in human blood and breastmilk. For that reason, Dana makes all of its AFM seals in line with PFAS Free, a central requirement from the industry.

 

AFM 34/2 – Even Better for Drinking Water
AFM 34/2 is a tried-and-true gasket classic from Dana for the drinking water sector and is approved under the Drinking Water Ordinance (or TrinkwV for short). Starting in March 1, 2025, plastics and other organic materials in contact with drinking water will have to meet heightened requirements for drinking water hygiene. Customers from Dana who use seals made of AFM 34/2 can lean back and relax: the Victor Reinz® gasket material AFM 34/2 is already certified according to the KTW-BWGL guideline under the TrinkwV, which will enter into effect in March 2025. And that goes for all required temperature ranges (cold, warm and hot water).

 

Dana and Victor Reinz® at the Achema
After a break for the pandemic, Dana rejoined the exhibitors at the ACHEMA in Frankfurt this year. The world forum for chemical engineering, process engineering and biotechnology counted a total of 2,842 exhibitors from 56 nations. 106,001 participants from 141 countries attended the fairgrounds to find out about innovative new processes for the chemical, pharmaceutical and food industries. Thanks to the new developments in AFM 80 and AFM 34/2, Dana had a full stand every day of the fair.

As Europe’s largest manufacturer of metallic bipolar plates, Dana has leveraged more than two decades of design-to-manufacturing experience to provide its customers with a variety of bipolar plate technologies, including metallic bipolar plates and graphite composite plates for mobile and stationary fuel cell stacks, metallic bipolar plates for hydrogen electrolyzers, and special bipolar plates for redox flow batteries (RFB).

Production of metallic bipolar plates for fuel cell stacks has been underway at Dana’s facility in Neu-Ulm, Germany, since October of 2023. With full production expected to reach peak volume of more than 8 million plates per year in 2025, Dana has the largest production line for metallic bipolar plates in all Europe.

The bipolar plates are being made into fuel cell stacks for mobile applications. These stacks will primarily be used in utility vehicles and will make an important contribution to the successful future of emission-free hydrogen mobility.

Demand for high-performance bipolar plates for proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers has also significantly increased over the past year. Dana’s new plate designs are currently undergoing prototype testing by leading manufacturers of electrolyzers and electrolysis stacks and preparations for commercial production are underway.

For the first time, Dana will have two stands to represent it at the Hannover Messe 2024.

Dana will be presenting its bipolar plates at Stand E 18 in Hall 13 where hydrogen experts from its application technology and sales departments will be available to hold discussions and answer questions. The company will also be showing an impressive time-lapse documentary demonstrating how 4,000m² of floor space in Neu-Ulm was converted for bipolar plate production in just one year.

Bipolar Plates and H₂ Gaskets

Dana Neu-Ulm uses its expertise as a gasket specialist for the production of bipolar plates used in fuel cells and electrolyzers. The US company Dana Incorporated has been developing hydrogen components for over 20 years and ranks among the technology pioneers for bipolar plates. The company also provides time-tested gaskets for hydrogen applications with its high-quality sealing materials.

 

Mass Production Launched

Dana’s site in Neu-Ulm now sets new records for metallic bipolar plates used for fuel cell stacks. It set up a high-volume line for metallic bipolar plates in just two years – the largest production line in Europe, churning out eight million components a year. The plates are reshaped and stamped in two huge presses before being cleaned, welded and coated. Plans to expand production capacities even further are already on the table. 

Alongside the new high-volume line, Dana Neu-Ulm is running smaller series production with a capacity of 800,000 plates per year. The company will continue to use this line to produce bipolar plates according to individual customer specifications.

 

An Electrolyzer Breakthrough

Dana confirmed that it is developing metallic bipolar plates for electrolyzers with proton exchange membranes (PEM) at the 2023 Hannover Messe. These plates set new performance standards in hydrogen production. Prototype tests are currently underway at the world’s leading electrolyzer manufacturers. Dana Neu-Ulm supports manufacturers of electrolysers in the technology breakthrough with the help of the latest generation of high-performance metallic bipolar plates.

 

Sealing off Hydrogen Safely

Hydrogen, a gas with a small molecular size and high diffusibility, is now flowing through more and more industrial production systems. AFM 34 sealing material from Victor Reinz has proven its exceptional gas-tightness in leakage tests under EN 13555 – with hydrogen as the test medium. AFM 34 is physiologically harmless, has been approved many times over and is chemically resistant to H₂. This makes the aramid fiber-based universal sealing material the perfect sealing solution for hydrogen.
